MSK DISORDERS
Work-related upper limb disorders are prevalent in the food manufacturing industry, accounting for 23% of cases of occupational ill-health. Chronic back pain is a common side effect of repetitive movement and/or awkward postures and lifting.
OCCUPATIONAL ASTHMA
As much as 33% of food industry compensation cases under the Department of Work and Pensions Industrial Injuries Scheme comes from occupational asthma. Exposure to dusts like flour or spices can trigger respiratory problems.
WORK RELATED STRESS
Statistics show food manufacturing has the highest number of cases of stress, depression and anxiety compared to any other manufacturing sectors

DERMATITIS
Nationally, 10% of all people with dermatitis that is caused or made worse by their work are within the food manufacturing industry. Constant exposure to water, chemicals and food allergens can irritate the skin, leading to dermatitis.
NOISE-INDUCED HEARING LOSS
Blast freezers and loud machinery can damage employee hearing over time. Exposure to noise in manufacturing is common, and under the Control of Noise at Work Regulations Act 2005, employers are required to put measures in place to protect their employees.
SLIPS, CUTS AND BURNS
Food processing plants can be wet and slippery, which can increase the risk of slips and falls. Equipment can be sharp, and workers can be cut if they are not careful. Workers may be exposed to a variety of chemicals, which can cause burns if not handled properly.
